Sutherland
Tanqua succulent route will take you through 4 main vegetation
types, namely: Western Mountain Karoo, Mountain Renosterveld,
Upland Succulent Karoo and Lowland Succulent Karoo.

Flora of the Succulent Karoo vegetation in Tanqua Karoo exhibit
a clear north-south distribution, linking the flora of Namaqualand
and Richtersveld with those of the Little Karoo. The Tanqua
Karoo basin is thus an important dispersal route for plant
taxa endemic to the Succulent Karoo vegetation.
The
following are endemic species to be found in the Tanqua basin;
Braunsia stayneri, Conophytum bicarinatum, Lithops comptonii,
Hammeria salteri, etc.

The
Roggeveld plateaux, in contrast, rather seem to have been
supporting a "montane" flora, very similar to those
which still occurs on the Drakensberg escarpment.

Unfortunately very little is known about the endemic "Rog
of the Roggeveld", the Wild Rye grass (Secale africanum).
This highly palatable species is nowadays restricted to a
single site at Voëlfontein, but was previously probably
abundant in this area.
The
following are endemic species to be found on the Roggeveld
plateaux; Babiana virginea, Daubenia aurea, Cliffortia arborea(Sterboom),
Zaluzianskya sutherlandica, etc
